San Angelo middle distance rankings

For these rankings, I decided to set the parameters at 5 miles to 15k.  I was going to go to 20k but only a handful of people have run a 20k in the area since 2016.  These rankings were much harder to come up with than the 5k rankings.  There are a multitude of events held here in San Angelo between trail and road races that are between those distances and not everyone does all of them.  Like the 5k rankings, I know there are people that're deserving to be on here but I do not have a time for them.  (I'm looking at you Shannon Corona)  I did my best to rank only people that are in the area and tried to keep recency in mind.  What suprised me was some of the differences between trail and road.  Particularly me.  I am way faster on the road than on the track.  I don't just mean time, I mean in comparison to other runners.  That made it harder to rank myself, actually. What do you think of these rankings?  Who should be ranked hig...

Year in Review

You know, I have seen a lot of posts and heard a lot of comments about how awful 2017 was.  Is it simply hyperbole or recency?  Am I bad for not totally agreeing?  Sure there were bad moments, but I'm not about to post some meme that "2017 broke me."  Anyway, in running it was a year that came in like a lion and went out like a lamb.  I ran the Houston Marathon on the second weekend of January but only ran five miles over the last two weeks of the year.  I set some PRs, travelled around Texas to run, and made some memories.  As we start 2018, I wanted to take some time to look back at my 2017 "year in running/blogging." January 90 miles races: Hot Chocolate 5k Houston Marathon (4:03:44 PR) most viewed blog: Shannon Trail Series Race #2   160 views running pic of the month: Mike cheering on runners at the Shannon Trail Series Race #2 Running Highlight: finishing Houston not only with a PR but the support of my TNT Runners homie...

A lil sumpting

FINALLY!!!!  For the last 2 months I've been in a writing-intensive class that kept me away from blogging.  Don't worry, I did well and I haven't stopped running. couple things going on in my running world - Tomorrow is the RRCA Regional 8K championship here in San Angelo.  I'm "off season" but I'd still like to run well.  fingers crossed for no lightning! I signed up for my first 50 miler - the Wild Hare in Warda Texas in November.  I've got Jason and Anne coming to run it with me and maybe a couple of folks from here in San Angelo too! Now, I've got some spare time (no classes until July) but I can't just relax.  I'm also a numbers/rankings nerd.  My database of UFC and Bellator records is in maintenance mode so I gave myself a new project.  I'm working on a ranking schema for runners here in San Angelo.  I'm using all the results that I can find from races here in San Angelo since 2015 to figure out who the top 100 runners in...

Running 2016

Hey, maybe I should write a 2016 year in review. Let's see... Biggest "story" of 2016 for me in running and in life was moving from San Angelo.  This was a cultural shift from a big city to a small cowboy city. From a multitude of large running groups and a solid group of reliable running buddies to a couple of different groups made up of mostly the same people.  From running most of my miles with Ryan to running most of my miles alone.  I got to take a bigger part in the local running community though.  Hey, I'm in charge of the San Angelo Road Lizards Twitter now! (@SAroadlizards, we have 10 whole followers!) Additionally I got to charge of the volunteers for a small 5k and am looking at race directing for the first time next year. What else happened this year...  Oh, I started this blog.  Then I abandoned it.  This will be my first post since August.  Granted, I've got a few mostly fleshed out but never published drafts sitting here waiting...

Volunteering at the Run in the Sun 8k

As I've detailed in earlier posts, I'm about a month into my heart rate training.  That means, from May through August, it's nothing but aerobic training for this guy.  My fastest mile has been 10:20, so racing is pretty much out of the question.  As shown by our performances last year, Ryan and I don't quite know how to hold back during a race.  Additionally, I haven't met any runners out here and I figured that this would be a great way to do so.  I started trolling around the internets last week and found a couple races in need of volunteers. Mila, James, and I volunteered at the San Angelo Road Lizards 44th Annual Run in the Sun 8K this morning.  We showed up nice and early, 6 a.m. (Yes, I actually got Mila out of bed that early.) but didn't see anyone except a bunch of police.  We weren't sure if we were being set up for something.   Eventually we came across Daniela, the race director, and a few other SARL folks. T...
