And on to the next one

I wrote last month about my new set of goals and how I'm re-focusing my running and general workout strategy.  I'm not sure if strategy is the right way to put it, but let's go with that, shall we?  My brother Andy, put me on a 6 week progression workout that involved high weight, complex lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press, and overhead press) interspersed with core workouts, rowing, air assault bike sprints, and my normal easy group runs.  Mila did most of the workouts with me. she almost looks bored with that amount of weight At the beginning of January, I set my baselines: Bench (7 reps) 125 pounds Overhead Press (7 reps) 90 pounds Squat (1 rep) 285 pounds Deadlift (1 rep) 275 pounds I also had to take a practice Air Force PT test.  Here's how it turned out: 43 push ups (1 minute) 54 crunches (1 minute) 10:50 1.5 mile run We had fun doing the workouts and I was able to do 90-95% of the schedule.  There were a couple days when illness, time, o...

Birthday Run

The crazies here in San Angelo talk of running their age in miles on their birthday.  I.... didn't do that this year.  You can tell I'm getting ready for a looooong race by the fact that 17 miles is considered tapering.  I made the mistake of destroying myself in the gym Friday afternoon, so I figured that a 17 mile run would be rough. I was right. Unfortunately, no one showed up.  But, I guess that's fitting.  Most of my long training runs here have been solo.  I have no Ryan Byron anymore.  It's all good, I still had a run to get in.  Thursday, I scouted out part of my planned route and found out that it was NOT a good idea.  There were a number of unchained, unfenced dogs that did not abide by me running on THEIR stretch of road.  I ended up having to dodge traffic and run on the grassy section in the center of the road.  If they really wanted to bite me, they'd have to work for it.  Since it was my birthday, I decided to...

Race Week

Wow, last week was a busy one.  Between Saturday and Saturday, I ran 2 races, a PT test, and a fun "race" with Mila, I'm a bit sore (achilles and right hip, specifically) but hey, it was worth it! On Saturday, March 11th I ran Trail Racing Over Texas' Crazy Desert Trail Race 5k.  They also had races ranging from 10k-100k.  Plenty of my fellow Road Lizards ran the half marathon and even the 100K, but I couldn't go that far due to the PT test on Thursday. photo taken by Trail Racing over Texas After a poor showing at  Shannon Trail Series 3 , where I went out too fast trying to catch up after having to retie my shoes, I was determined to run better.  Again, in trail races, it is hard to gauge a race based on time as courses can vary so much..  So, I had to measure how well I felt about my run.  Turns out - pretty good.  Since it was a chip timed race, I didn't push my way to the front.  I stayed in the back to make sure that my sho...
