2019 Shannon Trail Series Race #1

Hello Everyone.  My regular reader(s) will note that it's been 2 months since my last post .  In that time I finished up college, went on a fantastic road trip, and relaxed a bit.  It's a new year, so it's the perfect time to get back to the "grind." This weekend we had the first race of the trail series, one of the Road Lizards' most popular events of the year.  As I wrote about  last year , Mike took Dennis and I under his wing in order to leave the series "in good hands" while he enjoys his retirement road trip.  We've been learning a lot about race directing and have thankfully had a lot of help.  Full disclosure, Dennis has been doing the majority of the work, but I do my best to help him when I can.   As typical, Kent has been marking the course for the past couple weeks, placing pink tape on seemingly every branch and cactus on the course.  We went out there Tuesday night to take a gander and there was pink everywhere. from l...

San Angelo middle distance rankings

For these rankings, I decided to set the parameters at 5 miles to 15k.  I was going to go to 20k but only a handful of people have run a 20k in the area since 2016.  These rankings were much harder to come up with than the 5k rankings.  There are a multitude of events held here in San Angelo between trail and road races that are between those distances and not everyone does all of them.  Like the 5k rankings, I know there are people that're deserving to be on here but I do not have a time for them.  (I'm looking at you Shannon Corona)  I did my best to rank only people that are in the area and tried to keep recency in mind.  What suprised me was some of the differences between trail and road.  Particularly me.  I am way faster on the road than on the track.  I don't just mean time, I mean in comparison to other runners.  That made it harder to rank myself, actually. What do you think of these rankings?  Who should be ranked hig...

Trail Series Wrap Up

Well, the 2018 Shannon Trail Series is in the books and I'd say it was succesful.  I mean, I'm biased and all, but it was a bigger turnout than I'd expected.  The races averaged 40 more runners than last year.  I'm not exactly sure why there were more people this year, but I'll take it.  I posted a recap/preview blog a couple weeks ago and the response has blown me away.  It's at 700+ views.  My second most widely read post doesn't even have half that amount.  There ended up being some problems come award presentation time, but I'll get into that later. We had a bit of adversity to deal with from the get.  It was raining, so James wasn't willing to set up his expensive sound system.  Can't say that I blame him.  After meeting him at HEB and the Preisers at Chick Fil A, we got to the park a little after 6 am.  As we were driving to the trailhead, we saw a couple bunnies, deer, and Ross hurrying somewhere while towing the SARL trail...
